Welcome to our inaugural 2022 new release movie draft!  At the beginning of the year, in this podcast episode, we each selected movies scheduled to be released this year to form our teams.  Over the course of the year, we have tracked the IMDb rating and the Box Office Mojo world-wide gross box office dollars for each movie as our two metrics of success.  We are keeping score by tracking the average rating across all movies and the sum of all gross revenue on each team.  The team with the highest average movie rating AND highest gross box office wins.  In the event of a tie, where we split the scores… we are still figuring that out.

It’s proven to be a challenge for a few reasons:

1. This is the year theaters finally reopened as we exited Covid, so we got a lot of releases, but also a lot of movies still got pushed into next year (shown below with the gray background).
2. Movies that go straight to streaming have zero box office, so it is possible to improve your average rating while providing no boost to total dollars
3. A weird number of movies have low or average ratings but high box office returns
